Another Great Review for Jacky Atkins and her book " The Mysterious Beach Hut"

GW Sept 10 Beach Hut review

MU Jacky’s success is no mystery

Guildford Mother’s Union (MU) president Jacky Atkins is also a prolific short-story and poetry author, but this year saw her first novel published – The Mysterious Beach Hut, aimed at 8-year-olds and up. The Wey asked Abigail, 12, a young writer and local church choir member to review the book for us.

“The mystery is set during the modern school summer holidays (which is also when I read the book), with Holly, 12, and her sister Beth, 9, on a beach break at Brighton. Without giving too much away, they meet another, rather strange, little girl and end up mysteriously being transported in a time-travelling beach hut back to the summer of 1914 and the eve of the outbreak of war.

“Along the way, they find themselves muddled up in all sorts of extraordinary adventures and mysteries leading to an unexpected conclusion… oh, but I can’t say more, I really don’t want to spoil it for you. You’ll just have to read it for yourself.

“The truth is I really enjoyed the novel and would rate it a ‘must read’, and a nine out of ten! It says that it is suitable for ages 8-year-olds and up, but I think plenty of adults will enjoy it too!

“I actually read it all in one hot, sunny day while on holiday because it’s simply un-put-down-able! (Is that even a word? If not, it should be!). All the tension and plot twists and turns made me want to read on. I really wanted to find out what happened at the end and why everything had turned out the way it did – the book kept me guessing right to the end and it didn’t disappoint!

“There’s an interesting mix of historical events, fact and fiction - and writer Jacky Atkins uses a lot of really good describing words which made me feel like I was actually there experiencing what was happening. And being on a beach holiday myself while reading the book, I was just disappointed not to have my own fantastic beach hut!

My advice – get your own copy of the new book and sit down and lose yourself in an exciting mystery. I hope you’ll enjoy it just as much as I did”.

Congratulations Jim Colombo on being a September featured book by Barnes & Nobles in their General Fiction club!

Congratulations Jim Colombo! We are so proud of you over here at SBG! We love to see our authors succeed. Check out this awesome interview!

Interview with Jim Colombo author of Keys to the Vault

Welcome Jim Colombo to the board, as you know we'll be discussing his book this month starting on Tuesday here's an interview we did a while ago.

Interview with Jim Colombo

Debbie - Jim could you give us a little personal and professional background on you

Jim -  Sure. I graduated from Lewis University in 1977 with a B.A in Fine and Applied Arts /Art History. Golly that seems like a long time ago! Since then I have been working in land engineering services. I worked for companies that designed subdivisions. That is until about a year ago when the bad economy hit the housing business and I lost my job.
I'm single, never married. I'm not sure how that happened, but there it is! I live in Joliet all of my life in the same house that my Grandfather built in 1930!

D - Is Keys to the Vault your first work of fiction

J - Yes Keys to the Vault is my first attempt to write anything at a professional level. I am really fortunate that since it was my first attempt, that it is was published and so well received by everyone who reads it.

D - Do you have something in the works now – does it star Caroline

J - Yes. I am working on something. A murder(Fictional, of course!) or an adventure of some sort. I have recently completed a story about a world renown art conservator who is also an art thief, but I think I want to polish it up just a bit more. I am also busy working on Caroline's second adventure. She has got her hands full as she investigates how the wrong painting ended up hanging on the wall in her sister Catherine's office. It leads her to uncover the cause and the villain behind who and why the nations crops are failing in the fields. I think it should be an exciting adventure and I am eager for her to tell me the rest of her story.

D - Is writing a full time job for you

J - Writing is something that I would love to turn into a full time job. It is certainly demanding enough to be one. However I do split my time between writing and trading some of the commodity markets. Both are enough to keep me busy and on my toes. They both challenge me to be at my best, which is something that I enjoy.

D - You said you like to travel, where’s the most favorite place you’ve been to – where haven’t you been that you’d like to go

J - Without a doubt my most favorite place that I have been to is Rome, Italy. I absolutely love it there. I feel at home there. The city is beautiful, the sites are fantastic, the food delicious ... and the people are some of the most friendly I've ever met. In fact it is a goal of mine to live there for an extended period of time. I think that would be a great way to take in the fullness of the city. To really understand it
As far as places that I would like to see that I have not yet made it too ... Well I can think of two. I would love to experience the Great Pyramids and temples in Egypt, and to see the Great Wall and the Forbidden City in China. These ancient temples have always fascinated me and I think that it would be wonderful to see them up close.

D - Where do your writing ideas come from, do you base your characters on people you know

J - Sometimes I'm not sure where my ideas come from. When my mind is quiet, I can hear the ideas in my mind. It is then that I need to continue to pay attention to them. I try to write them down so I can capture as much of the details as possible before my mind becomes cluttered with the noise of everyday living again.
Sometimes I do base some characters on people I know, or perhaps several people. Maybe I'll take a habit from one person and combine it with a nuance from another. This way I know that my characters are acting in a realistic manner. That their actions are based on real life people and how they would act in certain situations.

D - Was becoming an author a life-long dream or did you want to be something else when you grew up.

- When I was a youngster I grew up wanting to be a racing car driver. That was the top in my opinion, and still is actually. But sometimes life gets in the way of certain things and now I am a bit too old to compete with the youngsters. On the other hand being an author has a wonderful set of benefits that I never dreamed of. The challenges of putting the story together and explaining it just the way that I want to is first rate. The thrill of seeing my book on the bookshelf along side Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple is exhilarating. I love sharing my love for books with others who like to read them as much as I do. When I was young I never dreamed that one day I would be a writer. That is what makes life so interesting I think!

D - Okay Jim here’s the last question for you. Tell us something about you that would surprise us.

J - I'm really just a nerd, and one of my secret desires is to be able to speak five or seven languages fluently!

I wanted to thank you Debbie for giving me the opportunity to answer these questions on your page. It was a lot of fun, and some really great questions too! They made me think before I answered them. I am looking forward to the discussion coming up during the month of September. I hope a lot of readers stop by and join our conversation.
Thanks again.

Strategic Book Group would like to introduce author Benjamin J West and his new book "The Eight of Spades" to Amazon.

Get it here, right from the authors mouth!

A lifelong resident of Hull, in the East Ring of Yorkshire, where I was born in 1948, the same year the NHS was created. Yorkshire, born and bred, and very, very proud!  I have two other brothers, Brian, the eldest, Geoffrey, the middle one and myself, the youngest.  Our parents were Marmaduke James and Marjorie Joan Howarth. My wife, Constance, is my third wife and strangely enough I am her third husband although we have known each other for more than thirty years.  We were married on the fourth October 2006 at Oulton Hall in Leeds. Everything happens at 4:30 p.m. on the fourth October.  We actually got together at 4:30 p.m. on the fourth October we got engaged at 4:30 p.m. on the fourth October and of course we got married at 4:30 p.m. on the fourth October. The only downside is, my life will probably end at 4:30 p.m. on the fourth October, hopefully though not for many years to come.

I have two beautiful daughters who both live in Hull.    Paula, the eldest, who was born, September 1973. She runs her own, very successful, restaurant, ‘Stanley’s’ Paragon Sq. Hull with her partner, James.   Sally, the youngest, born August 1978. She works in a sports shop in Hull, her partner, Paul, who too works for the same company but in a different shop in Hull. They have one child, Elliott, my grandson of course, and he was born March2009.      My wife has three lovely children from a previous marriage, Melanie, Clare and Matthew.

I spent the majority of my working life in the print trade. First moving around, gaining valuable experience and then finally settling down to one company where I stayed for thirty five years before being made redundant at the age of 58 in an attempt to save the company. Unfortunately it only survived for a further nine months before it sadly went under in 2006.   Plate making and print management was my forte, the manual plate making forlornly going out of the window due to the further onslaught of computerisation. This was where I turned to my other skills and progressed into purchasing and Production control which is where I was when I was made redundant.

Since then and now I am in Food retail working for a local company that supplies fresh, frozen and ambient food to everyone from small takeaways to hospitals, schools and chains, local and within a sixty mile radius of Hull.

I have always, well, as long as I can remember, had a keen interest in writing but regrettably have only managed to live the dream in my later years.                                                              My ultimate dream is to write fulltime hopefully, very, very soon.                                                 I started to acquire the interest in writing a long, long time ago, they say ‘everyone has a book in them’ well I did.                                                                                                                          I had already written the basics when I went to college to learn the proper way to attack the interest and from there it has escalated to the present.                                                           With the sheer power of the pen in hand the world is literally at your fingertips as nothing, but nothing is impossible, the creative field is endless.

Writing has taken over my life, but soon, my life will take over my writing

My one saying in life, says it all really!

My first book is a trilogy, the first part, The Eight of Spades: A Law unto Themselves, is about the British Government, struggling with a multitude of political failings, furtively removes eight people from their homes and blackmails them into helping the Government. However, these eight citizens will not serve quietly and they quickly turn on the very Government that betrayed them.                                                                                                                                  They steal a highly advanced super ship belonging to the Royal Navy and rename it the Intruder. With the British Government denying all knowledge of their very existence, the group transform themselves into Public Enemy Number 1, the invincible, enigmatic, Eight of Spades.                                                                                                                                               When the team undertakes the challenge of clearing the Icelandic waters of the fearful gunboats that harass British trawlers in the 1976 Cod War, they find themselves nose-to-nose with the Navy they just humiliated. The Navy wants their ship back-preferably in one piece-but if all else fails, a million pieces will suffice.

The second book, The Eight of Spades: The end, Is Just the Beginning will hopefully be completed by the end of 2010.

Other works in the pipeline:                                                                                                                 ‘If I slip through your fingers’ A scintillating love story that will set fire to your mind and body. This book has been started, although only just, but the groundwork has been completed and it is only a matter of time now.                                                                  ‘Everything is not enough’ A science fiction story with an audacious, blood curdling twist. The groundwork is finished but it has not been started as yet.                                                Then hopefully the completion of the trilogy although this may be brought forward depending on time progression.                                                                                                    There are a million other positive ideas splintering my brain but these will only come to fruition in time, my one and only enemy.                                                                                            I write because the pen is mightier than the sword. I have so much inside that is yearning to be set free. Being able to create is so satisfying and most of my inspiration comes from within and hopefully will continue to do so.                                                                             People watching, to find characters and mannerisms is a pastime I will see someone or something and think to myself ‘I will use that somewhere along the line.’                          When the first novel was completed I felt as if I had been given the world. A very deep feeling of satisfaction came over me and that feeling is still with me today pushing me forever onwards.
