“It’s a technique I just used to use for myself and then one day I thought other people might find it useful too”, runs the explanation from this CEO of a large pharmaceutical laboratory based in Geneva. Discretion does not stand in the way of humour, however. While our solid fifty-year-old is desirous of remaining anonymous the pseudonym he has chosen to publish his first book under is “Johnny Frog” – a knowing wink at a taste for teasing that likes to pop up where it’s least expected.
In between two flights and three board meetings our CEO has set down the technique he has been using for years to keep track of his diary without loosing his head. Remembering every co-worker’s first name (a challenge when there are several hundred), finding that little story or that memory is what demonstrates thorough knowledge – be it of a business case or of a person.
And it all started with a game. Our CEO is often in the USA and would often amuse himself – and surprise his interlocutors – by reciting the names of all the American presidents from memory. “Easy” exclaimed our Johnny Frog. The trick involves image association and a system of little boxes neatly filed away in a corner of his mind. His book is making a killing on the Web. Faced with the success of this trial run Johnny Frog’s friends have asked him to drop the frog mask and publish a “Frenchified” version of his method.
