Sara is from Shreveport, Louisiana. She is the founder and first president of the Shreveport Astronomical Society in 1958 which is still active today. With many people the finest Amateur Observatory of its kind was built in 1964 just south of Shreveport. The telescope is a 16-inch Newtonian reflector with a Cassengrain focus. She graduated from Louisiana State University with an Honors Degree in Mathematics and Astronomy in 1965. Sara has attended four other colleges and universities. She has completed 18 hours of coursework toward a Master’s Degree in Geology.

One of her jobs after college was working as an Aerospace Engineer on the Saturn V during Apollo, one of the first and only women to do so.  She is a pilot and a sailor.  She worked on the Trident Nuclear Submarine from 1974 until 1980.

Sara has been very fortunate to be able to visit many Astronomical Observatories.  She visited McDonald Observatory on Mt. Davis in 1972 and watched the ruby laser being fired at the moon. The reflectors had been placed on the moon by Apollo 11 Astronaut Neil Armstrong. She also has visited Palomar Observatory as well as Kitt Peak National Observatory.

In 2009 on the 40th Anniversary of Apollo 11, she was contacted by the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian who asked for her written history. Sara met Dr. Wernher von Braun in 1961 and Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson in 2005.  She has been contacted by engineers from England, Scotland, Australia, Japan, Russia and the most recently--Argentina.  Sara’s first book was written for the kids and is titled”The Biggest Explosions in the Universe.” It is a fun book about the birth and death of stars.

Sara’s second book is “Something Funny Happened on the Way to the Moon” about her funny experiences working for Boeing on Apollo. Sara never worked for NASA.

Much to her surprise, Sara found that she really enjoys writing.  She started keeping notebooks about all the interesting things she discovered at an early age. She loves Astronomy, space exploration and Geology.   Her second book was written after forty years of silence. Sara is one of the very first women to work as an aerospace engineer on the Saturn V rocket of Apollo.

Besides writing Sara enjoys public speaking and has spoken to many school classes as well as the U.S. Naval Academy to rousing cheers.
