British Gitmo Detainee Compensation Termed ‘Disgusting’
British Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke announced Nov. 16 that the British government will compensate all British citizens and residents who were interned as terrorists at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The amounts of undisclosed payments by the British government are being made in an effort to resolve lawsuits, so an independent inquiry into torture allegations by those imprisoned can begin. Clarke told the House of Commons, “It could have taken years; it could have cost tens of millions of pounds. It was a difficult and unusual situation, but it was the right thing to do. I think we’ve saved public money.”
Granger is a three-time mobilized U.S. Army Reserve Major (Ret.) who wrote the book Saving Grace at Guantanamo Bay: A Memoir of a Citizen Warrior about his time at Gitmo. He is outraged by this decision. “I feel this is a disgusting capitulation to terrorist apologist organizations,” he said. “Gitmo detainees have no right to habeas corpus, and the idea that as the British government says, they “have saved the public money,” have also encouraged a new generation of Muslim extremists. How long will it take before this pity money is used for the next terrorist bomb?”
Granger added, “Why won’t the British court system vet the reasons why these extremists were picked up in the first place? Where is the British sense of justice? Why have the scales tipped to give terrorists the benefit of the doubt? What about compensation for the victims of terror?”
He further stated, “I served at Gitmo and in Iraq as a medical service officer responsible for the proper care and treatment of detainees, and we captured al Qaeda training documents that specifically instructed terrorists to lie about their treatment should they be captured. There is no institutionalized torture or abuse in U.S. detention facilities, and in fact, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) personnel I served alongside, complimented us on
being ‘the best’ at detention operations in the world, bar none. Get the Gitmo Real Story athttp://gitmo.us.”
Saving Grace at Guantanamo Bay: A Memoir of a Citizen Warrior is Granger’s story of working detention and medical duty with the Joint Task Force 160 U.S. Naval Station in Guantanamo Bay from February to June, 2002. Granger found himself the ranking Army Medical Department officer in a joint military operation like no other before it. His job was taking care of alleged terrorists, just months following 9/11.
